There are so many over the counter remedies and magic pills available to get rid of the allergic reaction many of us have to pollen during the high pollen months, but many of them come with unwanted and sometimes even un disclosed after effects, that are just not necessary.
So here are some other ways to help keep your symptoms at bay.
One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is to prepare for the season, don’t wait until your symptoms are full blown and we’re right in the middle of Hay fever season before you start taking some action, start preparing a few weeks before you know you normally start getting the symptoms
The past few months have been really busy for me and even I forgot to get myself ready for it, so after a sneezing fit after being in the garden the other day, I’ve put it in my diary to get ready from March next year!!! No more getting caught out for me next year!!! After just a few days of following these tips my symptoms have definitely improved though so don't worry if like me you forgot
During the season itself there are two simple things you can try. Firstly make sure you keep the windows and doors closed whenever possible, especially during the evening when the pollen settles, which is when many sufferers will starting sneezing more and reacting more.
Secondly, invest in an air purifier to filter the air and get rid of the pollen in the air in your home. They generally take up little electricity, so you can keep it going in one room for a few hours and have that as your sanctuary in the evenings.
Those are the things you can do to improve your environment. As far as preparing yourself internally, getting a good source of Vitamin C and Quercetin can help keep your immunity higher to the effects of pollen. You can get good levels of vitamin C from dark green leafy vegetables, fresh and frozen berries, oranges, kiwi, mangos, lemons, pineapple, tomatos romaine lettuce among other things. Quercetn can be found in red onions, apples, parsley, grapefruits and regular tea leaves.
Nettle tea and Ginkgo Biloba are two herbs that are reputed for helping hay fever sufferers manage their symptoms. Take 2 cups of nettle tea a day and a high quality Gingko biloba tincture can be taken as directed on the packaging
One of my favourite remedies for hay fever sufferers is fresh frozen bee pollen . You can get the one off the shelf, but the fresh frozen one is more potent at giving you relief. It is also a good vitamin and mineral supplement. It is sounds a bit crazy to eat pollen when that’s what you’re reacting to, but fear not, the air borne pollen you react to is different to the edible one, which is not only known for relieving hayfever, but also other allergic reactions.
I hope you have a good summer
Take care and stay healthy
